Albany Veterinary Hospital

416 Albany Highway, Albany, Auckland

The hub from which our group's reputation has grown.

The team at Albany Veterinary Hospital

The Albany Veterinary Hospital is celebrating our 30thBirthday in July 2021 and would like to say a HUGE thank you to our community for all your support over the many years. It is the trust you all put in us that allow us to help your beloved pets and we truly appreciate you.

The Albany Veterinary Hospital first started in Library Lane in Albany Village and moved to its current location at 416 Albany Highway in 1994.Dr Grant McCullough has owned the clinic for the whole of its life and veterinary nurse superstar Paula Thoms has been here from the beginning.  She has been the go to for all the nurses and vets coming through the clinic throughout the years.

Grant is not often seen in the clinic these days as Albany clinic has now grown to a group of clinics called the Veterinary Hospital Group. Grant is also the current President of the NZ Veterinary Association and spends significant time fulfilling that role.

However, Paula has been in clinic and has been constantly upskilling her nursing and working hard out the back on surgery over the 30years.  She has been working alongside our referral vet Dr Penny Birchall for the last few years and has enjoyed the challenge and change of pace from GP practice nursing.

Sadly, it is now time for Paula to retire and spend time at home being annoyed by her husband.  We are going to miss her knowledge and personality around the clinics, as I’m sure a lot of beloved clients will too, but we wish her all the best.

The Albany Veterinary Hospital has enjoyed building some amazing relationships over the last 30 years and the staff love seeing all the new and old pets and owners coming through our doors.  We look forward to many more years being here for you and your pets, and hope to see your furry friends for cuddles soon.

Conveniently located on Albany Highway with ample parking, Albany Veterinary Hospital is a small animal practice ready to cater for any of your animal needs. The team of Vets includes Daniel Lamont, Penny Birchall, Monica Commons, Danial Valikhani and Genna Ackroyd. The nursing and support staff are  Karen Huddleston, Jo Carter, Amber Hislop, Anastasia Smith, Emma Furnival and Jayde Da Silva.

Grooming services are also available on site.

Dr Grant McCullough

Grant McCullough is the Managing Director and Owner of the Veterinary Hospital Group. Originally from Whangarei, Grant has worked in Equine and Dairy Practice in Northland, specialist Centres in the UK and for the last 25 years in Small Animal Practice in Auckland. Grant purchased Albany Veterinary Hospital in 1991 and has overseen the steady growth of the group since that time. Grant lives in Coatesville with his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters, a dog, 3 horses and lots of sheep. In his spare time he enjoys family time especially if that includes yachts or snowy mountains

Dr Penny Birchall

Penny is our recent addition to the Vet Hospital Group in the capacity of lead surgeon (orthopaedics and soft tissue) and imager. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge having studied for her post graduate qualifications in both surgery and radiology in New Zealand and then trained in ultrasound while in the UK. She has been working in referral practice in England prior to her return to NZ. She is always happy to take on complex surgery and 'hard to solve' problems and loves her ultrasound. When not at work she runs marathons, skis and sails (this includes sailing round the world with her husband and children)

Dr Daniel Lamont

Daniel grew up in the Hawkes Bay and following his graduation from vet school he worked in a predominantly farm animal practice in the King Country, until a desire to see the world led him to the UK for 5 years, where he worked in a variety of veterinary practices.
