Laparascopic Spey

Bitches can now be speyed using a laparascopic technique with minimal wound rather than the conventional larger wound.

Laparoscopic Spey’s at Albany Veterinary Hospital:A Gentle, Modern Way to Care for Your Dog

At Albany Veterinary Hospital, we know your dog isn’t just a pet—they’re family. That’s why we’re proud to offer the latest technology in surgery with laparoscopic spey’s, a minimally invasive alternative to traditional desexing surgery.  This modern technique helps your pup get back to zoomies, cuddles, and tail wags in no time!

So, What Is a Laparoscopic Spey?

Think of it as the high-tech version of a traditional spey. Instead of one large incision through the abdomen, we use a tiny camera and delicate surgical tools inserted through just two or three small “keyhole” incisions. This allows our experienced veterinary surgeons to remove the ovaries with incredible precision, all while keeping tissue trauma to a minimum.

It’s like performing surgery with a fine paintbrush instead of a paint roller—more delicate, more refined, and easier on your dog.

Why Albany Pet Parents Love It

We love seeing tails wag sooner—and so do our clients! Here’s why laparoscopic spey’s are a growing favourite among caring dog owners:

  Quicker Recovery

Most dogs are back on their paws and feeling great within just a few days. That means less rest time and more playtime, sooner!

  Less Pain

Studies have shown that dogs undergoing laparoscopic spey’s feel less discomfort post-surgery—up to 65%less pain compared to traditional methods

  Lower Risk of Complications

With smaller incisions and minimal internal disruption, there’s less bleeding, swelling, and risk of infection. That’s peace of mind for you and comfort for your dog.  If there are complications, the keyhole approach can be changed to an open abdominal approach.

  Minimal Scarring

Tiny incisions mean tiny scars—great news for your dog’s comfort and great for those adorable Instagram photos (yes, we know you take them!).

  Back to Normal Faster

One of the biggest benefits? Your dog can often return to normal activities in just 48–72 hours. While we still recommend taking it easy for a bit, most pups are up and wagging well before the 10–14 day rest period required after a traditional spey.

Is Your Dog a Good Candidate?

Laparoscopic spey’s are a great option for all healthy dogs, though we’ll confirm what’s best during your dog’s pre-surgical consultation. Whether you’ve got a playful retriever, a curious Cavoodle, or a cheeky Staffy, we’re here to help them have the smoothest spey experience possible.

Give Your Dog the Best Start

At Albany Veterinary Hospital, we’re all about combining gold-standard veterinary care with genuine compassion. Our laparoscopic spey service is just one of the ways we help your pets live happier, healthier lives—with less pain, faster healing, and more time doing what they love.
